12 days of travel through Chilean Patagonia

Reservations for the 2021 season are open

On this 12-day stay in the south of Chilean Patagonia, I invite you to discover the country through a circuit of more than 1500 km of roads and tracks between the Andes and the great Chilean lakes.

When you land, we will head directly south, to the village of Puerto Tranquillo, 200 km from the airport, where we will stop in cabañas before reaching the small town of Cochrane.

Arrived in Cochrane, we will spend 5 nights in cabañas less than 50m from the river, coffee by the water by spotting the gobages, cold meals at midday and dinners in local restaurants. To end the stay, '' Asado '' (grilled local meat) at the Cabañas for the last evening.

Plain river with turquoise blue reflections sheltering Farios and Rainbow Trouts.

The water is perfectly transparent and the fishing is done mainly on sight. In the dry, at the hottest hours of the day, the trout climb on small black flies but sight nymph fishing remains the ultimate weapon for the most wary of large trout.

The Rio Cochrane is a demanding river with some courses congested by vegetation requiring a discreet approach and long casts. But the game is worth the candle!

We will also be able to fish the Rio Varas, a hundred kilometers of track to the South. The Varas could be likened to a mid-mountain river in the Massif Central. Depending on the period, we may come across Chinook Salmon or 'King Salmon' which can be caught on sight just a few meters from the end of the rod. Few of the meteorological windows allow this type of fishing, but when it occurs ... It is possible to fly bite salmon weighing more than 20kg!

On the courses mentioned above, fishing is practiced by wading.

I also propose a fishing experience in "Flotada" (cataraft of 3 places) on the Rio Baker.

In addition to this, you need to know more about it.

We will be greeted by Rafael Barroso, manager of the Green Baker Lodge. We will borrow the Catarafts from him for the day and dine at the Lodge restaurant in the evening.

More than 800 m³ of translucent water comes out of Lago General Carrera, the second largest lake in South America after Lake Titicaca.

For me, a day of Flotada fishing on the Baker is a must for any avid fisherman passing through the region!

In the morning, it happens regularly to fish for the fallout of the flying ants of the day before. The large Arc en Ciel roams under '' Lespuma '' the foam that forms on the large counter currents of the Baker.

It is not easy to distinguish from the intense blue of the waters the platinum gray back of the Grand Arcs. After a few hours of fishing, the eye is made and the trout appear one after the other. You will be standing at the front of the Raft, fly in hand and ready to launch, going down the river at a slightly slower speed than the current.

At the end of the day, the light changes and the large Arcs give way to Farios. If the conditions are with us, beige cadducers will emerge from the gravel banks of the upper part of the river and the Baker will offer the most beautiful of its shows. A rain of swallows!

If the swallowing is long overdue, we will go down the river fishing the banks with a large streamer to dislodge Farios and Arcs. A 9 'silk of 9 is recommended, because if you see a red doted dragon appear from behind a block of granite to form a streamer as long as your hand, it is better to be well armed!

The rest of the stay, after the big climb north of the Aysèn region will take place at Rosa's house on the banks of the Rio Nireguao.

Rosa's farm is located approximately 150 km northeast of Coyhaique airport on the Rio Nirehuao border between the Austral road and the Argentina / Chile border.

It will take us about 4 hours by 4x4 to reach our accommodation. The first part of the journey is on the Austral road then on track following the Nirehuao.

Rosa is the owner of the farm converted into an inn who will welcome us during the stay, she will also take care of the breakfasts and dinners made up of local specialties.

The hostel is located a few hundred meters from the edge of the Nirehuao.

The rooms are simple and comfortable. For lunches we will take cold meals to the water's edge.

To end the stay as it should be Rosa will prepare an '' Asado al Palo '' the famous lamb on a spit cooked over a wood fire, a local tradition accompanied by potatoes and seasonal vegetables and a full-bodied Chilean Red!

In addition to this, you need to know more about it.

The Nirehuao takes its source in Argentina, a pampas stream running through the plains blown by the wind of the valley of "La Luna" it becomes a powerful river linking up large pools and zones of rapids on its lower part.

The upper part of Nirehuao: The '' Pampa '' offers a very high density of Farios, we fish mainly dry with large imitations of grasshoppers. This area is very windy, we often find ourselves throwing against the wind coming directly from Argentina.

The river makes great meanders through the meadows of the valley of '' La Luna '' and measures only a few meters wide, easily fished by wading.

The middle part: the Nirehuao widens and continues to create great meanders through the meadows. Wider, it now offers the capacity to accommodate larger trout. Fario and Arc-en-ciel are waiting for you, the imitation grasshopper fishing is still as effective and we will also swim a large dark streamer in the deep pools to try to wake up a large Fario!

The gorges: After its confluence with the Rio Norte, the Nirehuao flow doubles and flows into narrow gorges. Access requires a considerable approach walk. But it's worth it ! We will come across Fario and Arc-en-ciel posted in full current ready to climb on a large dry well presented.

We will also have the opportunity to fish other rivers: the Rio Uni, its upstream part characterized by large meanders and a sandy bottom shelters a large population of Farios often posted in the shade of submerged dead trees. Flirting with an imitation mouse near ice jams can be explosive!

Arroyo Seco: small stream serving as a refuge for the large Farios. The '' Lago Zapillo '' can be fished by wading or by boat. We will also fish the Emperado, a medium, translucent river winding between large blocks of granite and submerged willows. Beware of boosted arcs!

One of the great advantages of this region is the choice of fishing routes, the options are almost limitless!
